Milton Erickson ... The metaphor of the boiler plant

The metaphor of the boiler plant

Once, when Milton Erickson was a student, he was walking on the street in my town and saw the other side is rather large building, which carry noise. He looked up and saw a sign on the building in which it was written that the boiler plant "This is". I do not know whether this is you, but in those days for heating sufficiently large hotels used steam boilers. Imagine the size of a boiler room, skinned sheet steel of appropriate thickness, the top United rivets every two feet or two rivets on foot, or maybe three. Rivets at the edges of sheets of steel held inside a huge boiler pressure.

Being curious, Erickson said to myself that there might be something to which to learn, so he crossed the street, and even crossing the street, he heard that noise is becoming stronger and stronger. He came to the boiler plant and went inside. He said that within the noise was terrible. I think that there, among the various steel sheets and other things hither and thither came people fastened rivets lists, well, you can guess. And these people roll steel sheets ... Erickson saw that the workers that go there, then back to his business. They communicate with each other and understand each other, but Eriksson could not hear them ... inside the boiler plant. This caused his curiosity. He told me: "I think it have something to learn". So, he stopped and said to one business: "Can you call me the owner of the factory? I want you to have asked him to go outside. I must talk to him ".

So, the owner of the factory went out and Eriksson said: "I am a student, wondered how the process of learning, and would like to sleep on your factory". The owner said: "All right". So, Erickson went home, took a pillow and blanket and returned to the boiler plant. He said that when he returned to within the noise still was terrible: riveting, the introduction of steel and etc. After a while he found a secluded place in the corner, put a pillow and blanket and lay down. I think he was out of the job, but even there the noise was terrible ... But he said that around midnight he managed to take and remove noise from your consciousness and then he fell asleep.
